18th Century Belle: The Plan

I have no real time frame in which I want to finish all of these pieces, but I thought I'd outline a basic plan of the items that I definitely want to make and those that I am considering making. The color palette I will be going for is one of soft blue, sage green, dusty pink, dark rose, and mustard yellow. I based this palette on color selections from screencaps of Belle's outfits and I think it's a lovely palette overall!

I will, of course, include some other neutral colors like black (for shoes) cream, and white, especially if I decide to a version of the dress from the end of the live action movie:

Though there is nothing about that dress that looks 18th century, I'm having some lovely ideas for it as a white floral dress inspired by dresses like these:

I would try to find or custom make a floral print that includes the colors from the other dresses for potential mix and match options. That, however, will be one of the last on my list of things to make since I want to focus on the outfits from the original animated film first. I'm also considering the dress from The Enchanted Christmas since I think it would translate beautifully into an 18th century style:

That dress is just begging to be made into an open robe gown with a cream colored stomacher and petticoat. I love the idea of a quilted petticoat for this dress since it's supposed to be a winter gown.

So what will I focus on first? Here's are some lists!

Underpinnings: The base layer is essential to getting the right shape for the dress, so I will start with these!
  • Shift (various styles)
  • Stays (at least 2)
  • Bum pad
  • Pocket hoops
  • Grand pannier
  • Under petticoats
  • Clocked stockings (various colors)
  • Embroidered pockets
Day Wear:
  • Blue work dress or blue jacket
  • Green gown (style to be decided)
  • Pink gown (style to be decided)
Petticoats:
  • Blue
  • Green
  • Pink
Cloaks:
  • Simple navy hooded cloak
  • Fancy dark rose hooded cloak with white trim
Evening Gown:
  • Yellow sacque
  • Ribbon trimmed stomacher
  • Embroidered stomacher
  • Rose trimmed stomacher
Accessories:
  • Apron
  • Fichus
  • Engageantes (sleeve ruffles)
  • Caps
  • Straw hat
  • Mits
  • Black shoes
  • Ivory shoes
  • Court shoes dyed yellow and decorated with gold (hopefully these come back in stock!)

These are all the things I plan on making (or buying) with certainty if I want Belle's entire animated movie wardrobe. I'm waiting for a sale on Simplicity patterns to get 8162 and 8579 and I'll probably pick up 8578 while I'm at it. Sadly, I just missed a sale last weekend so it may be a while before I can get them at the $1.99 sale price. In the mean time I may order EA363501 since I don't think the print on demand patterns ever go on sale and it will be nice to have a commercial pattern and instructions for a grand pannier too though I will only be using that for the yellow dress which will probably be one of my last items to make. I am considering EA363701 as well since it's meant to go over that pannier, but I'm not 100% sold on that idea since I think some other patterns may be more historically accurate and I might just have to go for draping the gown over the pannier. I will start on some embroidered pocket designs right away and work on those on and off when I need a portable hand sewing project to do. I already have some fun ideas kicking around for what I want the embroidery designs to look like on those.

Once I get basic underpinnings made, I will start on the blue work dress with apron since that should be the simplest dress on the list to make. After that I will move on the the green and pink dresses and finally the yellow saque dress with the grand pannier. Or I may consider going straight into the yellow saque so I have Belle's two most iconic dresses finished first! We'll see how ambitious I'm feeling after getting the blue dress done. Of course I will need various accessories to make each of these outfits complete. Some I will make and some I will buy. I've found instructions for making clocked stockings and may try to make some of my own so that I can get them in interesting colors. Otherwise I will buy some basic white ones from American Duchess which should go nicely with everything.

If I get everything on that list done there are some other things I am considering:

Day Dress:
  • Blue floral (inspired by doll at right)
Formal Dresses:
  • Red gown
  • White floral
Petticoats:
  • Cream quilted
  • Various coordinating
Jackets:
  • Yellow floral chitnz
  • White floral chitnz
  • Various coordinating
Riding Habit:
  • Yellow jacket
  • Yellow petticoat
  • Waistcoat with gold trim
Accessories:
  • Various coordinating stomachers
  • Red shoes
  • Pink shoes
  • Green shoes
  • Blue shoes
  • Really every pair of shoes from American Duchess that I can afford!

Whew! That's a long list. I don't know that I'll actually get even half of this done, but it's fun to think about and plan. I've been busy adding all sorts of items to my Pinterest board to inspire me and will hopefully get some designs sketched out soon. I have some books on the way and have been poring over other books from the library. I'm hoping to really get going on things within a month.
